To Promote and Maintain the History of our Ancestors through Research, Education, and Outreach
The Descendants of DeWitty, NE would like to introduce our project. We are a non-profit corporation in Nebraska 501(c)3 status. We are now five years young. DeWitty was the longest – lasting and most successful Black settlement in the Sandhills of Nebraska from 1907 – 1936. On April 11, 2016, the state of Nebraska Historical Society honored DeWitty, with a Historical Marker on Highway 83, acknowledging the significance of DeWitty, NE.
As a result, we have a 12-piece traveling photo exhibit with a historical reenactment, 22-piece exhibit for museums and smaller venues. A Lesson Plan for 4-5 graders that meets the Common Core Curriculum Standards including a teacher guide. The book Sunrise Sunset for Freedom our legacy story. We also created an Animated video depicting the DeWitty story for 4-5 graders.
The Descendants intend to pay homage to our ancestors as we establish our place in the American narrative. Who do you know?
